In many traditional holiday toy drives, a Santa Claus figure distributes presents to children while parents watch from the sidelines. While well-intentioned, this approach can inadvertently diminish parental involvement and agency, especially in low-income communities. Recognizing this, we launched Good Givers—an initiative that reimagines the gift-giving experience by placing parents at the forefront.
What Is Good Givers?
Good Givers is an annual toy giveaway designed to empower parents in low-income communities by allowing them to select and provide gifts for their children. By shifting the focus from the giver to the recipient, we honor parents' deep understanding of their children’s needs and preferences. This approach ensures:
Parents are seen as the heroes in their children’s lives.
Gifts are thoughtful, intentional, and aligned with what children truly want.
Families’ dignity and agency are upheld.
How Does It Work?
Community Partnerships: We work with trusted community partners, such as low-income apartment complexes, where families can easily access the event without transportation barriers.
Thoughtful Toy Selection: High-quality, culturally inclusive gifts ensure that each child feels seen and celebrated.
Parent-Centered Distribution: Events are child-free, allowing parents to select and wrap gifts themselves, creating a dignified and empowering experience.
